"Hi, Just a quick update on my Disney extravaganza! Thanks to the hard work of Delamar Academy, I was recently lucky enough to work on the latest Disney film in production, 'John Carter of Mars'. This was an amazing step up for me to be able to work on a project with such a high reputation and of course budget! To be able to be in a situation where I was learning every day, not just from one great hair/make-up artist but at times forty highly skilled and experienced artists was truly priceless. Which is ironic as it has also been one of my best paid jobs. My position was as 'hair trainee', an area that I've not always been the most comfortable in, however jumping in at the deep end and getting stuck in, made me realise that having the confidence to take that risk is half the battle won. I now feel much more capable to make use of the hair skills I learnt at Delamar, without letting nerves hold me back. One of the other benefits of working on 'John Carter' was that I was far from being on my own. Not only did I have the pleasure of working with fellow students both in the hair and make-up departments, but also some of my Delamar tutors, who were still encouraging and supporting me, despite the fact I had graduated two years previously. The work hours did take a little adjusting to, but I found going to work with film stars on the planet Mars or New York in the late 1800's, made the 3.30am wake up call that little bit easier to take. Thanks again Delamar for a wonderful experience......... I can't wait for the next project!! Jennie"

How you'll learn it

The Programme lasts 12, 14 or 16 weeks, with various 1 & 2 week modules throughout, ending with the 2 week Haircutting and Barbering module followed by the 2 week Hollywood Hair module. If you're already a trained and qualified hairdresser, you may prefer to sign up for 12 weeks rather than the full 16.

In addition to the modules listed below, you will be coached throughout the course in topics such as professional business skills, set etiquette, and the make-up artist's role in the industry.

Introduction

Your first week introduces you to the fundamentals of make-up. All full-time students receive a kit box full of materials for use on the course, as well as a copy of "The Complete Make-up Artist", written by Penny Delamar - the Principal of Delamar Academy. This is a well known and respected text book on all aspects of make-up and will become a vital reference as you progress through the course.

Basic Beauty Make-Up

In this module, you'll study facial anatomy, health and safety practises, skin care, the correct use of tools and products, the principles of lighting and shading in make-up, as well as colour mixing and blending, the application of bases, and beauty make-up for day and evening. You’ll also cover bridal make-up, corrective make-up (contouring and face shaping), and the make-up techniques required for HD TV and Film.

Camouflage and Period Make-Up

You'll learn how to apply camouflage make-up for concealing tattoos, blemishes, and scars etc. Then you'll learn how to research and use reference photos to create period looks and period make-up for Film, TV, and Theatre. Now you'll move on to hair techniques for use in both period and fashion hair styling. This will include using electrical equipment such as tongs, heated rollers, straighteners, and bendies. You'll learn techniques such as styling long hair, French pleats, bridal styles, braiding, and plaiting, as well gaining knowledge of a variety of hair products and how best to apply them.

The module takes you through blocking, dressing, cleaning, and washing wigs, as well as researching period styles, creating ringlets, spirals, pincurls, finger waves, and victory rolls. By the end, you will understand and be able to apply the correct styling for a particular period setting.

Period Make-Up and Hair

Putting some of your earlier learning into practice, you will now research a period look of your own choice and combine period make-up and hair to create an individual project. This will involve setting, dressing out, fitting, and applying wigs, as well as choosing and using costume to achieve the final finish for your required look.

Facial Hair

This is less about the problem kind and more about researching facial hair through the ages. You'll learn how to knot a piece of facial hair, how to dress and tong moustaches, beards, and sideburns, as well as all the skills needed for the application, maintenance, styling, and cleaning of facial hair.

There will be free-hand painting, shading and blending, cutting and using stencils, and you'll complete the module with an individual bodypainting project.

You'll become familiar with the use of products such as scar plastic, latex, wax, glycerine, and gelatine. Finally, you'll get the chance to design and create a casualty project.

"I have always wanted to work as a Special Effects Make - up Artist in prosthetics, so in 2007 I attended the 1 Year Course at Delamar Academy. The tutors were amazing and I aways felt as though all the staff were available to help and give advice at any time. As well as great facilities, Delamar is based at Ealing Film Studios, which added to the exciting experience. Delamar offers work experience throughout the course and also once I left, which is a great helping hand, as finding work is one of the hardest and most daunting tasks to a newcomer in the industry. Whilst on the course, I was given the chance to work on a range of different jobs. I started off with student films and then progressed onto TV shows including 'Dead Set', fashion shows/shoots, theatre and feature films. One bonus of being taught by tutors who work in the industry is sometimes it leads to trainee work - I worked on fashion shows with my fashion tutor, and assisted my hair tutor on 'Strictly Come Dancing'. All of these experiences were invaluable to my learning and helped me to become more confident in my work. Since graduating from the course, with Delamar's help, I have worked with various prosthetics companies, as an assistant on feature films, music videos, TV and other projects. I am currently working with Millennium FX as work experience / trainee and have been given the chance to work in the workshop and on set for some amazing projects, including 'Dr Who'. I am working in the career of my dreams - thank you, Delamar! "
